How to fix MBR in Windows XP and Vista

How to fix MBR in Windows XP and Vista: "type bootrec.exe and press Enter. This will rebuild the boot configuration data and hopefully fix your problem. You can also run the command with switches to fix just the master boot record (/fixmbr), the boot sector (/fixboot), or rebuild the entire BCD (/rebuildbcd)."

Even after crashing and installing windows for umpteenth time i still cant seem to find smoother way to recover windows from recover console.
it just took me well 3 and half hrs to recover win 7 in acer 5642g laptop, which i lost my patience when the last installation stuck in 41/41 some sysprep installation.
i had only win 7 32 bit dvd with me , so ended up recovering twice . then with the help of recovery console of the win 7 dvd i finally finished it.
foolishly enough, i played around .... and got successful in it....
my goal was to get to the cmd prompt.
shift + f10 didnt help.
my dvd version was not compatible ... i had 64bit backup 3dvds ...
so
i in recovery console i chose other option one with the recovery backup option ...
then i cancelled it and it took to the screen where i could enter the command prompt...
then did the above
bootrec.exe /fixmbr
/fixboot
/rebuildbcd
....
