The Samsung i5801 is an entry-level Android device running the latest 2.1 Eclair platform. The Galaxy 3 comes with a Corby inspired chassis, and has a 3.2-inch WQVGA TFT touch screen in addition to a decent3.0-megapixel camera with autofocus. However, one area where the handset truly shines is the connectivity options on offer. Users can connect via 3G (HSDPA 7.2Mbps), Bluetooth v3.0, or Wi-Fi 802.11 (b/g/n).

The i5801 lets you initiate SNS and IM with just a single swipe; your contact book is seamlessly integrated with all your SNS, IM, email, and calendar. The phone has an built-in GPS receiver and supports Layar Reality Browser which displays real view of a location and displays information with clickable icons on the screen. Fast Real-time route calculation makes it easier to reach your destination in the shortest possible time. The phone comes with Global core POI information Google Maps, which digs up info on nearby restaurants, movie theaters and other services.

The Galaxy 3 supports the unique 'Swype function', that lets you type much faster than you ever could. The app also intuitively adds your phonebook contacts into its dictionary. You can also write/copy/ paste text and send it via SMS, SNS, MMS, Email, Memo or calendar with the Write and Go support.

The handset is powered by a 667MHz CPU; despite which there is hardly any lag, thanks to the enhanced TouchWiz interface. The WebKit-based browser renders even heavy pages quickly and reflows the text to fit on the small screen with ease. It also supports Kinetic scrolling and smooth zooms for faster web navigation. The 3MP shooter comes with a clutter-free camera interface that offers a range of preset scene modes, as well as useful shooting modes such as panorama, continuous shooting and smile detection.

Samsung has ported the same excellent music player from the Galaxy S along with the 5.1 channel surround support in headset mode. The tabs on the top allow sifting through your collection by artist, album and playlists, or display all at once. Landscape mode renders some eye candy like CD cover flow or an alphabetical wheel. You can even share the song via email or Bluetooth from the context menu while the track is still playing.

The Galaxy 3 plays DivX/XviD files out of the box & videos run all the way up to 720 x 480 resolution. It is powered by a large 1500mAh battery, which is rated for 7hrs of talk time and 21 days of standby in 3G mode. The phone's extensive social network integration and multi-codec video supports makes it a compelling mid-range Android device.
